Case Study: First American Manages G/L Payroll Data

The nation’s largest data provider, First American Corporation supplies businesses and consumers with information in connection with the major economic events of people’s lives, such as getting a job, securing a mortgage or opening a business. Headquartered in Santa Ana, California, this Fortune 500 company traces its history to 1889.

Challenge: Validating G/L Payroll Data

First American outsourced its 35,000-person payroll to Ultimate Software (Ultipro). After payroll is processed for each period, Ultipro returns more than half a million rows of data for G/L posting and reporting by various internal entities. First American needed to verify this data would continuously meet all of the corporate hierarchy rules and the requirements of multiple accounting systems.

Solution: G/L Datamart Ensures the Integrity of G/L Payroll Data

RBZ&A created the G/L Datamart application to validate G/L transaction files from Ultipro and make the data available for reporting. This ASP.NET client application uses Microsoft’s One Touch Deployment to automatically apply updates to the client PCs when they are available. Oracle’s SQL Loader utility is used to rapidly import more than half a million rows of data into an Oracle database where a series of stored procedures is used to validate and report the data. A multi-worksheet Excel spreadsheet containing a variety of data views is then produced to allow users to manually verify the information. Once the data is accepted, it is stored in the Oracle database. It is also reformatted for compatibility with the Hyperion Essbase reporting system First American uses for G/L reporting.
